clipping.’s most recent EP, Wriggle, is a mixed bag. The title track is far and away the best song here, making excellent use of sampling of Whitehouse’s “Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel” and moving at a blistering pace, like clipping.’s take on Outkast’s “B.O.B.” for power electronics nerds. Amazing track.
“Shooter” has cool production, with the beat being primarily driven by the sounds of guns being rhythmically fired, reloaded, etc. Unfortunately, as interesting as the sounds are, the song itself doesn’t allow Diggs to do much in the way of compelling rapping, staying rather one-note throughout the track. Also, the song is about a mass shooting, but doesn’t make any level of commentary on it.
“Back Up” is a kinda dumb sex rap track. The opening verse contains the line “now she text me in the afterlife, while I take a shit“? Maybe I’m too dumb to get it. Production’s pretty good on this one, though.
“Hot Fuck No Love” is garbage. It distills everything I don’t like about “Back Up” and goes to Mr. Bungle’s “The Girls of Porn” levels of obnoxiousness, with stupid sampling of a “sexy” British woman, lyrics that are simultaneously graphic and bland, with the whole thing punctuated by shouts of “HOT FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK” contrasted by whispers of “no loooooooove“.
“Our Time” is alright. The song’s good. The singing is not.
Supposedly, these are the tracks that weren’t good enough for the next LP, and that’s promising if that’s the case. The group do seem to be aware that “Wriggle” is much better than the rest of the material, and if that song is an indication of what we’re getting next, that’ll be something to look forward to. I do feel, however, that clipping. are moving further and further from the roots that made them so viscerally powerful.
Take the title track and put it in all of your playlists, kill “Hot Fuck No Love” with fire, take or leave the rest depending on your personal love for the group.
